PRP, which is short for “Platelet-Rich Plasma,” is a revolutionary way for patients to address a variety of skin and hair concerns. Most of our blood is made up of plasma that is in a liquid form and includes white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are responsible for helping the blood clot and to facilitate healing after injuries due to special proteins called growth factors. By harvesting these growth factors and plasma, it can become a form of liquid that can be used in many positive ways for several levels of treatment. At The Glam Room, our professionals use this plasma specifically for caring for the skin and promoting the growth of new hair.
Most candidates interested in using PRP treatment for hair growth and skin rejuvenation are proper candidates. This is because the PRP is harvested from the patient's own blood, so there are no risks of allergic reactions. It is combined with the use of microneedling therapy or collagen induction therapy, which stimulates the skin's ability to produce more collagen and elastin while allowing the PRP to improve texture and tone, reduce the appearance of pores, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles when used for skin improvement. In regards to hair growth, the PRP is injected into the scalp and stimulates the follicles which allows for faster, softer hair growth and improved thickness.
The use of platelet-rich plasma for skin rejuvenation and hair growth is becoming an increasingly popular treatment in our office because patients love the results! With the use of common treatments such as microneedling, the PRP is used at the same time and penetrates into the skin. This allows the PRP to work quickly and provide noticeable results in 1-4 weeks. Patients are welcome to return regularly for PRP treatments to improve their skin's texture and tone continually.
Platelet-rich plasma is also used in our office for stimulating hair regrowth. Just like the same elements of one's blood is used with microneedling to improve the skin's texture and boost natural collagen and elastin production. It can be used in the scalp area to stimulate hair regrowth in men and women, resulting in thicker and fuller hair in a shorter period of time. It can be incredibly helpful for patients who are struggling with natural thinning caused from aging or male patterned baldness.
This particular method is highly desirable because it does not require any surgical intervention as do hair transplants. It also provides natural, faster results and eliminates chances of allergic reactions, which can occur with the use of certain medications or prescription hair creams and shampoos. Patients who are interested in using PRP for hair growth will need to come into the office routinely for treatment to see the desired results. Most patients have 4-6 treatments done 1 month apart, and then have follow-up treatments every four to six months to keep the results. These are called “maintenance appointments” and are highly beneficial for patients who want to continually improve their hair growth.
